Where is the liver? To start, the liver is situated on the right side of your. Unlike some other body parts that can be felt, the liver is located near the rib cage, which makes it impossible for it to be felt from the outside. The liver works to protect the blood stream in your body. It helps digest, absorb and process food in a proper way. The upper right part of the abdomen is where most of the liver is housed, while other parts extend to the middle and left part of the abdomen.


The liver’s main responsibilities are to filter blood and eliminate harmful chemicals from ruining your body. This 3.5-pound organ is the largest in the body and helps digest and absorb fats such as Vitamin A and K. There are two glands that make up the liver, the secretory and endocrine. The secretory gland helps make and secrete bile into the bile ducts. The endocrine gland helps make and secrete chemicals that can harm the liver and other organs. Synthesizing proteins and albumin is what the liver does to help prevent blood clots. Fatty acids are store and processed in the liver, but sometimes an excess of cholesterol leads to forming gallstones.

Unfortunately, the liver can become subject to several different diseases. Causes of liver problems can come from genetics, drugs, alcohol and immune system problems. Some of the symptoms involving a problem with the liver are: swelling, fatigue, bleeding and jaundice. Some of the diseases associated with the liver are as follows:

  • Liver Cancer: also known as hepatocellular carcinoma
  • Liver Failure: This form of liver disease is often associated with alcoholism, but genetic diseases and infection can also add to liver failure.
  • Hemochromatosis: This disease occurs when iron is sent to the liver and ends up causing major damage.
  • Ascites: This occurs when fluid is leaked out of the belly from the liver.
  • Hepatitis: While there are several forms of this disease such as A, B and C, hepatitis causes an inflammation of the liver.
  • Cirrhosis: This occurs when scars tissue begins to replace normal tissues.

There are several tests that medical professionals can perform to ensure that the liver is functioning properly. Some of these tests are:

  • Bilirubin: This test checks the bile levels in the body. The higher the levels, the worse the problem. High levels of bilirubin can cause jaundice, which makes your skin appear yellow.
  • Hepatitis tests: Doctors will test the antibodies in the liver to ensure that you have not contracted this disease.
  • Ammonia test: Checking the ammonia in the blood is a great way of knowing if the liver is functioning normally. The lower the levels, the better your liver is working.
  • Ultrasound: This can help check the size of the liver as well if there are any gallstones present.
  • Liver Biopsy: A biopsy will only be performed if other tests have shown signs of liver damage.

Liver Treatment

When the liver begins to deteriorate, sometimes the only thing to do is wait for a liver transplant. Parts or half of the liver can be donated to someone who needs a liver transplant. The liver is the only organ to regenerate itself to help restore its functions. If you have contracted Hepatitis A and B, they usually go away with time and little medication. Hepatitis C requires further treatment, depending on the situation. Liver cancer can be treated with chemotherapy and radiation. If needed, a liver transplant can be the solution to removing the cancer cells of the old liver.
